An Instructor’s Story
Q. and A. – Eh?
The time had finally come. Question and Answer technique to the fore! I keep reading about how useful it is as a teaching method, so I’m going to practice on my first pupil of the day, Thelma. Thelma is having driving lessons in Epsom and nearing test standard, though she is still a little hesitant at junctions. I have decided I’m going to ask her a question. When she gets to the end of the road, I’ll ask her, “Do you need your handbrake?” This will get her to think about whether she needs to apply the handbrake or not. I’m not daft!
This sudden surge of instructional inspiration had overwhelmed me as we approached the T-junction at the end of her road. Far better I thought to ask a question that only requires a yes/no response. She has enough to do already. She always stops to give way, even if the approaching vehicle is in the next town, so the handbrake question is relevant.
As we came to the end of the road, I thought how well she had done so far (only 58 minutes to go). She came to a stop as anticipated. We both checked to see if all was clear, and as I looked to the left I saw this fellow crossing the road carrying a huge bag. This distracted me momentarily and as I turned to look towards Thelma I said encouragingly “Do you need your handbag?”
She looked at me oddly at first and then burst into a fit of the giggles. I burst in to a bright shade of red. We did complete the lesson but no more searching questions from me!
You will be pleased to learn that I am now receiving counselling and I hope to begin the Q. and A. technique again in the very near future!
Thelma is still with me and now carries her handbag everywhere!
