Worcester Park, situated between New Malden and Sutton, is cut in half by its main route through the town centre. A busy road linking Sutton and North Cheam to the A3. The town centre is a thriving area with a major supermarket smack bang in the middle and a smaller Sainsburys at the top of the hill. This leads to fun and games at peak times as the supermarket access road is not controlled (at this time) by traffic lights. There are “Keep Clear” road markings, but these do rely on drivers on the main road complying and holding back when they cannot clear the junction.
Fortunately there are local roads where Worcester Park driving instructors can find suitable training areas for their pupils. Malden Green Avenue and its associated roads are great for a controls lesson which can easily be developed into moving away and stopping. There are a couple of gradients for hill exercises and the three or four roads can be used to practise basic left and right turns.
The developing new driver with their driving instructor in Worcester Park will find these roads limited after a while and can practise emerging on to the main Malden Road. There are often queues back from Worcester Park Station, so this could involve clutch control and slow moving traffic. Better perhaps to save this until a later date. There are other locations that will suit the Worcester Park Driving School. The Avenue and Salisbury Road are longer runs and can lead back to Manor Drive for a number of left and right turns together with emerging at junctions.
Narrower roads would be useful for meeting traffic purposes and the roads on the other side of Central Road offer just that, including a very narrow one-way street. At least nothing will come the other way, except cyclists who at times seem to be a law unto themselves.
Other useful areas to learn to drive in Worcester Park are to the south, namely the roads behind Stoneleigh and also North Cheam.
At the northern end of Worcester Park is the station. There is a pick up point for the station by the minicab office. The forecourt also houses a bus terminus. Access is via the traffic lights at the junction with the Avenue and Central Road.
Further north towards the A3 junction, off Motspur Park is Blakes Avenue. A hotspot for Driving Tuition in Worcester Park. This is manoeuvre land with two or three corners for reversing to the left. Enough spaces for the parallel park and busy enough to make the turn in the road challenging. Unfortunately the local residents can become exasperated if the Worcester Park driving lessons are without consideration. Please try and avoid practising a manoeuvre at the same time as another local driving school. The road becomes a slalom for local drivers and they finish up writing to the Driving Standards Agency to complain. The resulting letter ends up as a request at Morden Test Centre to avoid the area. No help to anyone!
A great place to explain and practise roundabouts is Manor Drive and Manor Drive North which leads to Malden Manor. There are three roundabouts. The first one at the end of Manor Drive is quiet enough for the Driving School in Worcester Park to introduce from an early stage, perhaps turning into Leyfield to avoid the traffic calming towards Church Road roundabout. This roundabout is busier and better for an intermediate level of training. The third roundabout by Malden Manor station is more of a car park with parking spaces actually on the roundabout. Observation before emerging is crucial here as the parked cars can block your view and should be an integral part of driving instruction in Worcester Park and beyond.
