Driving Lessons in New Malden KT3
We are a recommended driving school covering New Malden and have been established over 14 years. We offer good quality driving tuition by a fully qualified instructor registered with the Driving Standards Agency and a member of the Driving Instructors Association. Our instructor in New Malden is very familiar with the local roads and those around the nearest test centre.
New Malden town centre lies between Kingston Hill and the A3 and has been subject to a lot of road works over the last few years. It has been reduced to a 20mph zone to protect pedestrians as they criss-cross the busy road.
Learner drivers taking driving lessons in New Malden will find the High Street challenging with roundabouts at each end. Traffic calming includes a number of recently constructed islands and raised areas on approach to the roundabouts with the familiar red surface. These are used by pedestrians as crossing places and can be mistaken as pedestrian priority, so the learner driver needs to keep a watchful eye on the body language and positioning of pedestrians nearby who could easily step into their path.
The Fountain roundabout named after the pub on the corner can get seriously congested during busy times - which are most times! To help relieve traffic flow there are “keep clear” road markings on the roundabout at each access. These are designed for vehicles on the roundabout, which cannot clear a junction, to hold back and allow drivers on to the roundabout. When you are with your New Malden driving instructor be prepared to hold back if you can’t clear it, rather like a yellow box junction, so that you do not block the junction
There has recently been work on the A3 roundabout, which can be misleading. The Highways agency has widened it with specific lane markings for each route. The problem is, vehicles in the left lane appear to steer very wide suggesting they are leaving the earlier exit but swing round to cross the path of vehicles on their left – who may inadvertently move forward on to the roundabout. There have been a number of near misses recently!
Another busy intersection, which is known locally as Shannon Corner, has recently been further developed with a new B and Q store. In fact the roundabout is now partially traffic light controlled making it easier for the new driver to negotiate. New Malden Driving Schools will use this for the provisional license holder who is nearing driving test standard.
Fortunately for driving instructors in New Malden there are some quiet roads ideal as learner nursery areas and suitable also for the manoeuvres. I am thinking of the roads off South Lane, which I might add are included in Tolworth Test Centre test routes. Cotford Road is a favourite with local driving instructors in New Malden for the turn in the road and also there are some well-placed parked cars for the parallel park. I haven’t seen any of the car owners complain yet, so we should thank them for their tolerance. Green Lane has some corners for the reverse to the left, subject of course to availability with parked cars. Windsor Avenue with a couple of corners is the same
Further North near the Coombe Road area, there are more residential roads, which are suitable for driving instruction in New Malden. More 20mph zones and traffic calming have been developed, as this area is sensitive with the nearby Coombe Girls School.
For the driving school in New Malden with a new driver who is getting beyond basic junctions, the roads off Elm Road are particularly challenging for meeting oncoming traffic. These roads are narrow and something of a cut through, so there are plenty of opportunities for dealing with meeting situations.
South of the A3, which is still within the New Malden encatchment area, are Motspur Park and Malden Manor. Driving Schools in Motspur Park will be familiar with the difficulties presented by parked cars. Blakes Lane is popular with Motspur Park driving lessons for all three manoeuvres. The level crossings are great for Motspur Park Driving Schools covering that topic and for added variety Malden Manor driving lessons can include the narrow “rural” run to the Hogsmill pub Ewell-by-pass.
